CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR 2011- 2012
Unless otherwise noted, we will assemble to drive to these events
at the parking lot
in front of the Advanced Technologies and
Gymnasium Buildings at Rockingham
Community College (RCC). |
Sept 18
Sunday |
Leave RCC at 2 PM. We will walk along the upper Mayo river, near
the Anglin Mill bridge, for about a mile. This is a beautiful stretch of
the river, containing small falls and rapids, descending rock
formations. Our leader will be Bobby Irving. Moderate walk. |
| October 16 Sunday |
Leave RCC at 2 PM. We will drive to the Crowder family property. Our hike will be on a portion of the Old Indian Trail that used to
cross Rockingham County. We will visit the renovated Baker family
log cabin, built in the 1840’s, and walk a bit on a creek. Bob Carter
is our leader. Moderate walking. |
November 20
Sunday |
Leave RCC at 2 PM. We will visit the Nancy Moore property on the
west side of Hwy 14 south of Eden. You can expect a moderate
walk in winter-quiet woods along Town Creek. Milton Hundley is
our leader. |
December 3
Saturday |
We will have our annual winter covered dish dinner, at Calvary
Baptist Church in Wentworth, at the corner of Sandy Cross Road
and Hwy 87. Arrive at 5 PM with your salad, main course dish, or
dessert. We eat at 5:30 PM; and at 6:30 we will hear a talk on
“Ticks and Tick-borne Diseases in North Carolina”, by Dr. Edward
Breitschwerdt, DVM, Professor of the College of Veterinary Medicine
at NC State Univ.and adjunct faculty member of Duke University
School of Medicine. A significant number of our club members
have already had one or more of the three major tick-born diseases
in our state, and it is time for us as an active outdoors group to learn
about ticks and how to avoid them and the diseases they may carry.
Club officers for the next year will be elected at this meeting also. |
December 17
Saturday |
Our annual informal bird count, starting with breakfast at 6:30 AM at
Dick's Drive-in on Washington St. in Eden. We drive the highways
and by-ways of a good part of our county, noting the species and
numbers of birds we see. It's a lot of fun. We will have some birding
experts with us, so you don’t have to worry about being one
yourself! Call Lucy Berry at 939-9367 if you can join us. |
January 21, 2012
Sunday
|
This will be another walk on Town Creek, on the property of Bill
Moore. There should be a variety of winter birds along the creek
bottom. Milton Hundley is our leader. Moderate walking. |
February 18
Sunday |
Leave RCC at 2 PM. We will walk on the property of Harold Vaden
on the headwaters of Bold Run Creek. Our hike will include a visit
to a pond, as well as the creek, and we will visit the King-Stewart
family cemetery. Bob Carter is our leader. Moderate walking. |
March 20
Sunday |
Leave RCC at 1:30 PM sharp to car-pool to the Natural Science
Center in Greensboro, which will take about 40 minutes. The
Center contains both a zoo and a museum with a wide variety of
exhibits centered on science in the environment. Quite a lot of
renovation has been done at the Center since we last visited it,
and we look forward to seeing the new exhibits. There is a general
admission fee of $8 per adult; $7 for seniors 65 and up; and $7 for
children 3 – 13. |
April 15
Sunday |
Leave RCC at 2 PM. We will walk on the property of Janice and
Tom Wangard, descending a moderate hill almost 200 feet to the
Dan river, where Wide Mouth Creek enters it. There should be
variety of beautiful wildflowers in bloom at the river. The walk to
and from the river is about a half mile each way and, while not
terribly steep, it definitely provides exercise!
Our leader is Mike Vaughan. |
May 20
Sunday |
Leave RCC at 2 PM. We’ll be walking property of the Treadway
family, west of Eden. This will be another walk along a nice small
creek that is likely to have some wildflowers on its banks at this
time of year. Milton Hundley is our leader. Moderate walking. |
June 10
Sunday |
Leave RCC at 2 PM. It‘s the club’s annual covered dish picnic,
this year at Mayo River State Park. The club has reserved the
park’s elegant, covered picnic pavilion, so we will be “weather-
proof.”
We will eat on arrival, so bring a dish to share with others.
After
we eat, there is a walking trail we can explore. Usually
a variety
of birds can be seen, too. Please join us for a relaxed
afternoon
in a beautiful setting. |
